Williamsburg is an independent city of Virginia located on the Virginia Peninsula in southeastern Virginia. It was a fortified settlement in 1632 and was originally called Middle Plantation, but was renamed Williamsburg in 1698. The town received a royal charter as a city in 1722.
Williamsburg was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution. It is well known for Colonial Williamsburg, the restored Historic Area of the city as also for the College of William & Mary, established in 1693 that’s the second-oldest university in the US.
